Why I Teach Embodied Meditations

Ever go to your PT for an exam and find that you don’t move the way you used to?  Maybe you can’t squat as deeply, or they ask you to contract your glutes and you can’t connect to the muscles.  Perhaps you went to see your PT for chronic pain and notice that you feel much better after your evaluation even though you “just” talked.  Or maybe you’ve experienced an emotional release during a massage, meditation session, yoga practice, or during a long race.

Our bodies are incredibly wise, and they are speaking to us ALL OF THE TIME.

We just may not have developed the skills to listen.

But it is never too late to learn.

The word “embodied” can be used in a lot of ways.  For the meditations I like to teach, it is a felt sense of  experiencing yourself within the internal space of your body.  My meditation teacher training is through Judith Blackstone’s Realization Process, where we experience a fundamental consciousness within the space of our body that provides a basis of connection both to our self and to others.

It a very simple and practical way, I feel it helps us to learn to connect to our body’s wisdom.  Learning embodiment is a means of accessing your body’s innate wisdom.  This can improve your physical capacity and emotional intelligence.  Now when you go in to the PT, you may find you have the ability to contract your glutes when exercises alone couldn’t make that connection.  You may find your mobility and strength improve through that embodied connection.  Emotionally, you can experience deeper access to your own emotions.  You may also notice an improved discernment between your own feelings and the feelings you may be picking up from others.

It’s like getting to know yourself at the deepest level.  You learn who you are and what you want apart from everything your culture, schooling, family, advertising, and social media tell you that you should be.  You’re empowered through knowing yourself.

If you’re interested in experiencing these meditations join in for one of our free monthly meditation classes on Zoom.  See below to register and/or watch the video for some information on the class format.
